ROUGE RIVER WATERSHED
FROG & TOAD SURVEY
Volunteer to Survey your Local Wetlands for Frogs and Toads

Like the canary in the coalmine, amphibians are sensitive indicators of habitat quality. Their dual lifestyle makes them dependent on healthy wetlands as well as good quality upland habitat. The presence of a diverse assemblage of frog and toad species is a good indication. Wetlands are critical to the health of the Rouge River Watershed.
In 1998, Friends of the Rouge started training volunteers to survey Rouge wetlands for frogs and toads. The survey is a simple listening survey in which volunteers learn Rouge frog and toad calls. Surveys involve visiting the survey block several times a month after dark and listening for what species are calling. Results are compiled and mapped. reports with maps are provided to all volunteers as well as local communities and state agencies.
Training workshops are held every year in February and March at locations around the watershed. Register by calling or e-mailin in your name, address, phone and e-mail. If you are interested in surveying particular wetlands, please let us know.
